Introduction

What is Faith?

When people are said to have faith, Scripture shows us them acting in obedience to the Word of God. Faith throughout Scripture is synonymous with obedience. It is the action we take as a result of our persuasion of God’s integrity and ability.

  • Faith is believing that God is not a man, that He should lie, as it says in Numbers 23:19.

  • Faith is believing that God is able to do what He says He can do, as it says in Ephesians 3:20.

As a result of these convictions, if He says He will do something, I not only believe that it’s true because He doesn’t lie, but also that He’s able to do it. In response to these convictions, I act.

This action is now called faith.

We see this in the story of the father of faith, Abraham:

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭8‬–‭10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

By faith Abraham obeyed, and he received the seed of the promise Isaac.

In this month’s study, we’re looking at what it truly means to live lives of true faith. Jesus not only died an obedient death but lived an obedient life. He then sent His Spirit so we could do the same, revealing Jesus as we obey. True faith in God is seen in obedient lives.
