Scripture readings
Devotional 📖
The last portion of 2 Corinthians 5, Apostle Paul says that he no longer regards anyone according to the flesh because they have become new creations in Christ.
To regard someone is to view them in a particular way.
The church in Corinth was debating the authority of Paul because while his letters were weighty, his bodily presence was weak (2 Corinthians 10:10). What Paul is trying to make clear is that when we come to Christ, we all die with Him. According to the Father, we were all on that cross with Jesus, we were buried with Him and have been raised with Him. The flesh should bear no witness on our judgement of someone. We are to view someone who has died with Christ, not from the flesh (natural and bodily things), but according to their new life in Christ.
Who has God called them to be and what is God forming in them?
This is an important lesson that can protect us from overfamiliarity and dishonour in our relationships. Oftentimes we regard people according to their natural presentation. Maybe your friends are younger than you, but God has placed a weighty call on their life to change their community for Christ. Because you only see them as younger than you, you are unintentionally dishonouring the call of leadership on them through your interactions. We must be intentional to ask the Lord to open our eyes to those around us and the calls on their lives.
The scripture is clear that we have a responsibility to view and treat people, not from a natural and worldly lens, but from a spiritual one. Our standard of measurement has now changed. We must see as God sees.
Prayer 🙏
Heavenly Father, help me to see those around me as you do. Give me your lens so I do not regard people according to the flesh. Build up in me the spirit of discernment so I encourage and affirm the giftings of those around me and not be overfamiliar with them, dishonouring them in the process.
In Jesus name,
Amen.
