Are you prepared to suffer for Christ?
This is a question I ask myself more often than not, especially as Christian persecution begins to rise across the nations.
In 2 Corinthians 11, Paul talks about the Corinthian church falling for these ‘super apostles’ who sound high and mighty and charge for service. He reminds them of the true labour of being an apostle; that the glory is not in self, fame, or anything but one’s devotion to Christ.
Paul was whipped five times, stoned, shipwrecked three times, spent a night and day adrift on sea, and faced dangers from all things and that’s just the external pressures he’s had to endure. He reveals his heart by saying the one inescapable burden is his deep concern for all the churches.
Oftentimes, we desire to rush into serving the Lord without counting the cost and without true burden for His people, His bride and His kingdom. Rather than a revelation of Jesus, we preach propaganda for self. I can assure you through the integrity of scripture, that it’s not just how much you did for Christ that will be rewarded, but the heart posture it came from.
I Corinthians 13:3 - 'And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.'
Do we want to be the person who reaches the lost so we can count how many souls we’ve won? Or do we reach the lost with a deep concern for their salvation and a desire to love them as Jesus does?
Are we a ‘super apostle’ or a disciple?
Deep suffering, pain, persecution and humiliation are a part of the job description. The only way to endure is to look to Jesus. If we’re not focused on who we’re becoming, who we’ve been sent to earth for and who’s at the end waiting for us, then we’ll run when hardships come. Faith is vision-dependent. Place the Lord before you. Fix your eyes on Him, and you will not become weary or discouraged.
Prayer 🙏
Lord,
Purify the motives of my heart. Search me for any perverse way in me, and correct me Lord in my error. Give me the staying power in suffering and the grace to press through it.
All for you Jesus, always.
In Jesus Name,
Amen
