Luke 10
Luke 10 (NKJV)

The Seventy Sent Out

1After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go.

2Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.

3Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.

4Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road.

5But whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’

6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you.

7And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.

8Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.

9And heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’

10But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say,

11‘The very dust of your city which clings to us we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near you.’

12But I say to you that it will be more tolerable in that Day for Sodom than for that city.

Woe to the Impenitent Cities

13“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

14But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.

15And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades.

16He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”

The Seventy Return with Joy

17Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”

18And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

19Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

20Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

26He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?”

27So he answered and said, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’

28And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”

Mary and Martha

38Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house.

39And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word.

40But Martha was distracted with much serving…

42“But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Matthew 9:35–38
Matthew 9:35–38 (NKJV)

35Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

36But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.

37Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

38Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

Matthew 28:16–20
Matthew 28:16–20 (NKJV)

The Great Commission

16Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them.

17When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.

18And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

19Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Devotional 📖

God desires to partner with mankind to establish His purposes on the earth.

In the gospels, we see that Jesus first sent out the 12, and then the 70 to spread the message of the Kingdom. Multiple disciples, not just the 12, went out to preach the gospel, heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, all while Jesus was still on Earth. These amazing signs of the power of God in mere men didn’t just start in the book of Acts! All of this was evidence to Israel that the Messiah had truly come and the kingdom of heaven had really come to Earth.

While Jesus was on Earth, He was aware that the work of the kingdom would be limited if He did it alone. He actively sought to co-labour with those around Him to do the work of the Father.

The Lord sent His Spirit so He could multiply Himself in believers today to enable them to do the work He called them to. The program of God is never just left with one or a few people because it would make the work ineffective. We can only be at one place at one time. If the global Church all participated in working with Jesus to see His kingdom come and His will done, then the whole world would know Him!

Our proximity to the harvest does not make us labourers. We must understand our assignments in the harvest and work with God to see His plan come to fruition. It’s our responsibility as Christians to be an active contributor towards the global harvest. That doesn’t just mean going out on the streets to preach the gospel, though that is a useful tool. The creator of YouTube, regardless of intention, was a contributor to the global harvest! Because of social media platforms, we’re able to reach millions more people with the good news. God can use even unbelievers in His plan of redemption (see the story of King Cyrus)!

The truth of Jesus is that He desires to co-labour with man. The main issue Jesus identified is not with the harvest, because the harvest is plentiful, it’s with the labourers. The great commission is a mandate extended to all believers to reach the entire globe with the gospel, bring all nations to the knowledge of the truth through discipleship, and to consequently bring territorial and societal transformation in their nations.

God desires to co-labour with you…are you ready to get to work?

Prayer 🙏

Lord of the harvest, make me into a labourer. Raise in me a kingdom ambassador who is passionate about souls and your program for this earth. I want to always be ready to serve and quick to obey your directions. May the great commission be an even greater burden on my heart. Help me to burn brightly for you Lord.

In Jesus name,

Amen
