Devotional 📖
Throughout the scriptures, Jesus is referred to as ‘Rabbi’. A rabbi is a teacher of Judaism. The word itself literally translates from Hebrew to “my teacher” or “my master”. They had the ability to rule in matters of Jewish law which were handed down orally, first from Moses, the first Rabbi, to Joshua, then to students following.
One of the main functions of Jesus’ ministry was to teach. All throughout His time on earth, He instructed, commended, and corrected those who heard Him. It was through His ministry that we learnt what kingdom living looks like, the divine plan of God for humanity, and who God actually is. He unpacked the Old Testament and prophesied what was to come. He is the greatest Teacher to have ever lived.
When a rabbi takes in a new student, serving is essentially the first stage of discipleship. They would carry the rabbi’s bag, prepare his food, protect his rabbi and could not contradict him in public or rule against him in matters of the Torah.
In this chapter, Jesus begins by speaking about the relationship between a master and a servant. The servant is not thanked for doing what they were told and should not seek applause. Jesus highlights the attitude we as His disciples are to take to service. We shouldn’t expect applause for doing something we were expected to do, but rather remain in a position of humility as unprofitable servants, doing what they were expected to do.
If service is the first stage of discipleship, then can we really call ourselves His disciples if we refuse to serve God and those around us?
If service is not found in our lifestyles, we are not truly disciples of this great Teacher who was also the greatest Servant. The things Jesus taught and did were not suggestive, they were intended for the disciples to transform and build their lives on. As His disciples, we are to emulate Him in all things and to carry His teachings into our communities. It’s the entire purpose of discipleship: to look like and carry on the legacy of your rabbi. We must instruct our hearts and build our lives around service to God and to those around us.
The truth of Jesus is that He is our teacher and He expects us to be true disciples. His words are not just quotes for our bios but instructions we should live by. We must serve as He served, teach as He taught, and emulate Him in all things. The mandate is to raise disciples of all nations.
Prayer 🙏
Lord, make me into a true disciple by your Spirit. Help me to emulate you in thinking, speech and in action. Give me a servant’s heart and bring me opportunities to serve you and the world around me.
In Jesus name,
Amen
