Luke 22 (NKJV)

The Plot to Kill Jesus

1Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover.

2And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.

3Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.

4So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them.

5And they were glad, and agreed to give him money.

6So he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.

Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover

7Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed.

8And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”

9So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”

10And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters.

11Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’

12Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”

13So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper

14When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him.

15Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;

16for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

17Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves;

18for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

20Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

21But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table.

22And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

23Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.

The Disciples Argue About Greatness

24Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest.

25And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’

26But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves.

27For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.

28“But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials.

29And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me,

30that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.

32But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

33But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”

34Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”

Supplies for the Road

35And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”

So they said, “Nothing.”

36Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.

37For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”

38So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”

And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Prayer in the Garden

39Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.

40When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

41And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed,

42saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”

43Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.

44And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

45When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow.

46Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane

47And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.

48But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”

50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

51But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.

52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?

53When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly

54Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed at a distance.

55Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.

56And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”

57But he denied Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”

58And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”

But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

59Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean.”

60But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”

Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.

61And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”

62So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Mocked and Beaten

63Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.

64And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?”

65And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

66As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying,

67“If You are the Christ, tell us.”

But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe.

68And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go.

69Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”

70Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”

So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.”

71And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

Exodus 12:1-28 (NKJV)

The Passover Instituted

1Now the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,

2“This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.

3Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: ‘On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household.

4And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the persons; according to each man’s need you shall make your count for the lamb.

5Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats.

6Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.

7And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.

8Then they shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

9Do not eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted in fire—its head with its legs and its entrails.

10You shall let none of it remain until morning, and what remains of it until morning you shall burn with fire.

11And thus you shall eat it: with a belt on your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. So you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord’s Passover.

12‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.

13Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

14‘So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance.

15Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel.

16On the first day there shall be a holy convocation, and on the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation for you. No manner of work shall be done on them; but that which everyone must eat—that only may be prepared by you.

17So you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this same day I will have brought your armies out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as an everlasting ordinance.

18In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening.

19For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a native of the land.

20You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.’ ”

21Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Pick out and take lambs for yourselves according to your families, and kill the Passover lamb.

22And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning.

23For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you.

24And you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever.

25It will come to pass when you come to the land which the Lord will give you, just as He promised, that you shall keep this service.

26And it shall be, when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’

27that you shall say, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice of the Lord, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.’ ” So the people bowed their heads and worshiped.

28Then the children of Israel went away and did so; just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.

Devotional 📖

The passover is a meal commemorating the night the Lord struck the firstborn in Egypt, preserving the lives of the Israelites.

It was the last sign before their divine deliverance where He spared an entire nation because the blood of a Lamb was on the doorpost. It symbolises God's divine protection and covenant faithfulness.

By the 1st Century, pilgrims went to Jerusalem for the Passover. The sacrifices multiplied and the meal, where they would retell the story of the Exodus, was eaten at sundown.

The Israelites were commanded to eat the passover meal in haste, with their shoes, belts, staff and more on them, because deliverance was coming and they were not to miss their day of salvation.

For us, it’s a stark reminder of the urgency of salvation. Tomorrow is not promised. It’s only by the blood of the Lamb that we are delivered from the bondage of sin and can passover into our promise and our inheritance of eternity with God.

Christ is our passover Lamb. The blood of Jesus over our life is the guarantee that death has passed over and we have received His life. Jesus took the cup of God’s wrath so that we wouldn’t have to.

The truth is that Jesus is the passover Lamb. He came and sacrificed Himself for all of humanity so that we can be delivered from bondage and passover into life. Passover, or as Christians now take it, communion, is not a sad memorial service but a grateful reflection of what was purchased for us by the precious and priceless blood of the Lamb.

Prayer 🙏

Say a prayer of thanksgiving for the powerful blood of Jesus.
